  • The French Horn is made of brass and is part of the brass family along with the trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba and others.

  • The French Horn is commonly referred to as "the horn."

  • The horn is a conical instrument, meaning is starts small and gets larger line a cone.

  • There are three standard types of horns: The F Horn, the Bb Horn, and the Double Horn. The Double Horn contains tubing for both and F and a Bb horn.

  • The horn has the smallest mouthpiece in the brass family.

  • Most orchestras have four horn players with four different horn parts. The 1st and 3rd horn parts are usually higher and the 2nd and 4th horn parts are usually lower.

  • The horn is not a standard instrument in a brass band, but it is a standard instrument in a woodwind quintet along with the flute, clarinet, oboe and bassoon.

  • The horn has the longest tubing in the brass family. Uncoiled, the instrument measures 12 to 13 feet for a single horn and 22 1/2 feet for a double horn.

  • French Horns are not used in marching bands, hornists will usually march mellophone instead.

  • The French Horn originated from humans blowing on animal horns used during hunting centuries ago. Horns were first used as musical instruments in the 16th century, mainly for operas.

  • Early horns were only pitched in one key and you could only play the notes in the overtone series. "Stopping the horn" with your hand was then used to slightly change the pitch. Now we have different valves and levers to change notes and keys.

Horn Seating

Orchestra

In a symphonic orchestra, the French Horn section is typically set behind the woodwinds and next to the trumpets in the center of the orchestra. However, each orchestra may set up slightly different based on the piece they are playing and instrumentation.

Band

In a concert band, the French Horn section is typically set on the end of the middle row next to the saxophone section and in front of the rest of the brass. It is important to set the first horn on the left of the rest of the section and then seat by horn part. However, each band may set up differently based on instrumentation.
