Lesson 14: Getting Out the Spit!

In Lesson 14 we will learn some tricks to get out that darn spit!

Steps to Getting out the Spit

*Pull and roll technique

  1. Take out your mouthpiece.

  2. Roll your horn at the lead pipe to empty spit.

  3. Roll and pull out your main tuning slides.

  4. Roll and pull out your Bb tuning slide.

  5. Check your third valve tuning slides.

  6. Continue checking slides until you find the spit.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Spit and condensation will gather at the lowest point of gravity on the horn.

  • Most spit will be in the lead pipe. The rest of the water you will find is just condensation and extra moisture.

  • Give your slides a good shake when you pull them out.

  • When in doubt, PULL IT OUT!

  • When you pull out a valve slide, make sure you are pressing that lever down. Do the same thing when you put the slide back in.

  • NEVER pull all of your slides out at once. You may forget where to put them back.

  • Some double horns have a water key by the lead pipe for a quick release of spit so check to see if your horn has one.
