Why are lip slurs important?

Lip  slurs are essential to develop consistent and smooth lip motion through air direction. A lip slur is the changing of “partials” on your instrument without any break in air or tonguing. A “partial” is what we call all the different notes you can get without pressing down the valves. To change partials, you will slightly firm up or loosen your embouchure to go up or down-just like our roller coasters buzzing exercise. Remember that the most important part of lips slurs in air stream. A good French Horn player will incorporate lip slurs into their daily routine in order to get comfortable with moving around the instrument. This is extremely important on the French Horn due to how close the partials are on the instrument in the overtone series.
